Open Towards GlobalizationInterview - Prof. dr. Anđelko Milardović, Director of the Political Science Research Centre, Zagreb, October 2007Can you explain the transformation of politics in times of the second modernity in relation to the first? The first transformation is that the political is no longer constrained to the area of the national statehood, meaning that it is no longer played exclusively in that area but rather at a transnational state level. Bering that in mind we can also discus the transformation of the sovereignty concept. Sovereignty is not divided but different actors are included into its space. That leads towards a decrease in the autonomy of decision making inside the area of national statehood. Something new here is at hand and it relates to the transformation of sovereignty. Sovereignty is the key category or better yet the key substance of politics. Do you believe that the renascence of multinational companies as global players had an influence on reducing sovereignty?Multinational companies are one of the actors. The others are transnational civil society, various interest groups and expert associations. All of them had an influence on the transformation in reshaping the political field. Of course technology has to be included because it has altered the scenery. In which elements is the adjustment of political science to the new paradigm of the second modernity most essential?Political science of the twenty first century can no longer interpret the reality of the nineteenth and twenty century concepts. It is because of this that a methodological reconstruction and a construction of a new methodology are needed. In that case a new analytical tool would be created with which the modern world could be explained. Which problem is accruing with the transformation of political parties?Political parties are faced with the processes of globalization and individualization. The biggest problem with this is that they are not capable of adequately answering needier of these processes. Do you believe that globalization will experience the so called salto mortale or is its course unbreakable? If we observe the current situation we can conclude that there is an unsynoptic process here at hand. It is not yet known which shape is globalization going to form in the end. This is after all a process which we have to consider and towards which we have to be opened. Also it is necessary to try to anticipate the consequences that it brings.
