2. Sources and data bases
AHDS History
The Arts and Humanities Data Service for History provides access to over 600 online data collections of primary source material. The site also offers information, advice and training on how to develop digital historical resources.
America: History and Life
America: History and Life provides the most complete coverage of articles about the history of the United States and Canada from prehistory to the present. Published since 1964, the database comprises almost 400,000 bibliographic entries on U.S. and Canadian history.
Archives Hub
Part of the National Archives Network, the Archives Hub is an online gateway to descriptions of the archival holdings of UK universities and colleges. The repositories of over 60 institutions are listed and the descriptions may be searched or browsed.
ARCHON
Published by The National Archives / Historical Manuscripts Commission, ARCHON is a key online resource for UK archivists. On the site are details of archival holdings and record repositories in the UK, as well as details of some overseas repositories. This directory is fully searchable and can also be browsed.
Arts and Humanities Citation Index
The Arts & Humanities Citation Index® (A&HCI ®) and Arts & Humanities Search® provide access to current and retrospective bibliographic information and cited references found in nearly 1,130 of the world's leading arts & humanities journals. They also cover individually selected, relevant items from approximately 7,000 of the world's leading science and social sciences journals.
BOPCRIS
This is a searchable online database of British Official Publications, covering documents published from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries. On the site users can access abstracts for all documents, and the full-text of a limited number.
British History Online
This is a digital library of primary and secondary sources on British history, published by the Institute of Historical Research in collaboration with the History of Parliament Trust. Its contents span from the twelfth century onwards, and can be searched or browsed.
British Library
The British Library is the UK's national library and one of the six copyright libraries in the country. It contains a wealth of resources for all historians, as reflected by its website. On the site users will find online exhibitions, digitised materials, the library catalogue and information about many of the library's holdings.
CAIN
Based at the University of Ulster, the Conflict Archive on the Internet web project publishes a range of material on the Troubles in Northern Ireland from the 1960s onwards. Acting as an online library, it provides a vast amount of background material on the events in Northern Ireland as well as links to other resources.
CELT - Corpus of Electronic Texts
The CELT Corpus of Electronic Texts is a searchable online database of Irish cultural, historical and literary texts from the thirteenth to the twentieth century. The texts have been transcribed and in some cases translated. All are accompanied by introductions and bibliographies.
Charles Booth Online
Charles Booth Online provides access to a catalogue of digitised primary materials related to the nineteenth-century social campaigner Charles Booth, including twelve interactive poverty maps and family papers.
Cold War International History Project
The Cold War International History Project disseminates new information and perspectives on the history of the Cold War, in particular new findings from previously inaccessible sources on "the other side" -- the former Communist world.
Eurodocs
This is a library of Western European primary source documents available online, published by Brigham Young University. The documents are related to key historical events, and can be accessed as facsimile images or as transcriptions.
Historical Abstracts
Historical Abstracts indexes the world's periodical literature in history and the related social sciences and humanities.
Humbul RSS Channels
Humbul provide RSS (Rich Site Summary) Channels for each of its 29 top-level subjects. Any user of Humbul may include an RSS Channel within the web page of their choice. Updated daily, Humbul's RSS Channels bring your site the latest resources added to Humbul in your subject. As new resources get added, the content of your RSS feed changes.
Internet History Sourcebooks Project
The Internet History Sourcebooks Project provides access to a wide range of online primary source material: some material has been digitised for the site while other material is available via web links. The material is divided broadly into ancient, medieval and modern history resources, and there is also a range of subsidiary thematic Sourcebooks with geographical and cultural coverage.
Modern Records Centre
The Modern Records Centre, housed at the University of Warwick, is a key repository for records relating to Britain's social, political, and economic history, with particular emphasis on labour history. On this site users can find out about the holdings, publications and access details.
Moving Here
The Moving Here site is published by a collaborative group of British libraries, museums and archives. It covers the history of Caribbean, Irish, Jewish and South Asian immigration to Britain over the last two centuries, and provides a wealth of primary source material, including photographs, personal papers, government documents, and audio and visual resources.
National Security Archive
The National Security Archive is the largest archive of declassified US foreign policy documents and holds a huge amount of material relevant to Cold War history. On the website users will find useful information about the collections and publications of the archive, as well as access a good selection of digitised primary source texts.
NDAD
The National Digital Archive of Datasets publishes archived digital data from British government departments and agencies. Access is free, and both digitised material and finding aids for undigitised resources can be found online.
SCRAN
The Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network is a subscription-based collection of some 180,000 learning resources, images, video clips and audio files. There are over a million archive, library and museum records available online, as well as a range of learning materials.
Slave Movement during the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries
This is an online data archive on the Atlantic Slave Trade published by the Data and Program Library Service at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. It is designed for users with experience of statistical data manipulation, and provides the means to download documentation and raw data files tracking slave ship journeys.
Social Sciences Citation Index
The Social Sciences Citation Index® (SSCI®) and Social SciSearch® provide access to current and retrospective bibliographic information, author abstracts, and cited references found in over 1,700 of the world's leading scholarly social sciences journals covering more than 50 disciplines. They also cover individually selected, relevant items from approximately 3,300 of the world's leading science and technology journals.
The Avalon Project
The Avalon Project, published by Yale Law School, aims to make freely available online transcribed versions of primary documents, with an emphasis on legal, political and economic history. The majority of the documents are eighteenth to twentieth century and can be searched or browsed in a number of categories.

The Internet Library is the first public library of and for the Internet community and features online collections and exhibits as well as more traditional library holdings.
The National Archives
The National Archives is a new organisation that brings together the Public Record Office and the Historical Manuscripts Commission as a single national resource for British history. On the website users may access catalogues of The National Archives' holdings, online collections and exhibitions, and research guides.
Valley of the Shadow
The Valley of the Shadow is an impressive digital archive of primary sources published by the Virginia Center for Digital History at the University of Virginia. It concentrates on the experiences of two opposing communities during the American Civil War, providing users with access to thousands of relevant documents and an accompanying narrative.
